About ME

Shiqi is a first-year PhD student in Interdisciplinary Design and Media at Northeastern University, advised by Dr. Wallace Lages from the Reality Design Studio. She is a researcher and developer passionate about Extended Reality (XR) and human-computer interaction. Her research focuses on advancing the field of Extended Reality (XR) through innovative interface design and system development. She explores the convergence of virtual and augmented reality with emerging technologies like robotics and IoT to create more intuitive and immersive experiences. Her work spans from fundamental interaction design to practical applications across various domains, with a particular emphasis on creating meaningful user experiences that bridge the virtual and physical worlds.

Research interests:

  • XR Interaction & Interface Design: Development of novel, user-centered, and natural interaction techniques and interfaces for immersive XR experiences.
  • XR Systems & Development: Integration of XR technologies with IoT and robotics through robust system architectures and multi-modal designs.
  • XR Applications & Domain-Specific Solutions: Implementation of XR solutions across healthcare, scientific visualization, and educational domains.

Before settling in Boston, Shiqi Yu spent wondeful three years in the UK, working as a Research Fellow at Cranfield University on XR research for the DEBUT WM project and as an XR Software Developer at the University of Greenwich, where she led the development of an XR security testbed. She holds an M.S. in Design Informatics from the University of Edinburgh, supervised by Dr. Benjamin Bach, with a thesis on 3D medical data visualization using HoloLens. Her expertise includes XR, HCI, data visualization, and cybersecurity.
